Types of Bottled Water

There are six different types of bottled water!
(The FDA requires at least one of these types be met by a product in order to bear the label bottled water or drinking water)

  • Spring Water : Bottled Water that is obtained from an underground formation that allows the water to naturally flow above the earth’s surface. In order to be considered Spring Water it must also be collected via the spring or a through a connection to the spring’s source.
  • Purified Water: Bottled Water that has been produced using methods such as distillation, deionization, reverse osmosis, or other methods declared suitable for consumption by the government.
  • Mineral Water: Bottled Water that contains no less than 250 parts per million total dissolved solids. No minerals can be added to the product, and the definition applies directly to the proportion of minerals and trace elements at the source.
  • Sparkling Water: Bottled Water that contains the same amount of carbon dioxide that it contained as it emerged from the source. (This stands true for water that has undergone treatment or replacement with carbondioxide)
  • Artesian Well Water: Bottled Water that is collected from a well drilled through impermeable strata to reach water capable of rising to the surface by internal hydrostatic pressure. (An Artesian Well)
  • Well Water: Bottled water that is collected from a connection formed from the surface, through the ground, which taps the source.
